Niagen Nicotinamide Riboside
Nicotinamide riboside, also known as niagen, is an alternative form of vitamin B3 used in research for its ability to convert into NAD+. NAD+ plays a role in various biological processes, and there is increasing interest in niagen in scientific research, particularly regarding its potential effects on sirtuins, enzymes involved in various cellular processes.
A key focus of niagen research is on PGC-1α, a protein associated with protecting brain cells against certain types of stress. This is especially relevant in studies targeting neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's and Alzheimer's. Research is investigating whether niagen, through its conversion to NAD+, might influence the expression of PGC-1α and thereby affect processes related to these diseases.
In studies using animal models, the effects of niagen on cognitive functions and certain proteins linked to Alzheimer's are being explored. These studies aim to understand the potential of niagen in the context of neurodegenerative diseases and to elucidate the underlying mechanisms.
Additionally, research is examining the effects of niagen on muscle tissue, particularly in relation to NAD+ levels and muscle health under stressful conditions.
