What is Phosphatidylserine?

There are special fatty substances in your body that perform different functions. Phosphatidylserine is the fatty substance which covers and protects the cells in your brain. Brain cells send synaptic currents between them and phosphatidylserine helps with this process. So, scientists now believe that phosphatidylserine plays an important role in keeping your mind and memory sharp.

Animal studies show that as a person or animal ages, the amount of phosphatidylserine decreases, making it harder for us to think clearly and remember things. However, by topping up phosphatidylserine scientists believe we may be able to preserve our memory and cognitive skills for longer.

Research Studies

A Japanese study using soy-derived Phosphatidylserine showed improvement in memory function for patients after a 6-month placebo-controlled trial. During the trial, both the placebo taking patients and the phosphatidylserine taking patients had an initial improvement in memory. Then the placebo group’s improvement declined and the patients taking phosphatidylserine continued to improve.

A literature study by US researchers concluded that phosphatidylserine is essential for healthy nerve cell membranes and mylein. They claim that phosphatidylserine supports human cognitive functions including short and long term memory, new memories, recalling memories and focussing attention. They also found it promotes the ability to concentrate, reason, solve problems and communicate. It is even important for motor functions such as reflexes.
